Suzanna returns to US

May 31st, 2005 by management

After five lingering years, singer Suzanna Lubrano finally returned to the United States and there was clear indication that she had been deeply missed. Following her staggering performance during “Taste of Capeverdean Music” mega concert in Washington DC on April 22nd, Suzanna reconnected with her New England groupies at Club Lido this past Friday

The crowd showed up expecting a fun overflowing evening with plenty of excitement, and they got just that. Soon after opening act Brockton-based Rapper D. Lopes animated the audience performing several tracks from his newly released sophomore album “The Bright Darkness,” the band jumped on stage to set off “Nha Sonho,” prompting the fans to show their passion, jumping and screaming “Suzanna, Suzanna.”

Sexy and beautiful–in a way that could be intimidating–she appeared on stage and began singing, not without greeting the crowd. Backed by a five-piece band and a backup singer, Suzanna, winner of the prestigious Kora Awards in 2003, delivered an honorable one-hour show during which she tendered a list of hit songs from her three solo albums “Sem bo nes mundo,” “Fofo,” and “Tudo pa bo.”

On songs such as “Nha sonho,” “ladies night,” “fofo,” “Comunicaçao Visual,” and “Sem bo nes mundo,” she showed impressive power and vocal ability.

Throughout the evening, Suzanna, who also performed at Club Ghetto in New Jersey on April 30th, cajoled with her fans, inviting them to sing the chorus of each of her songs. Before “Silencio,” a graceful Suzanna took the time to explain that the song was dedicated to a young adolescent who had been assassinated in Holland, her adoptive country.

Suzanna and her band were heating up but the announcement of the night’s last song left her warm fans begging for more. “Tudo pa bo,” (All for you) seemed to be the right way to end a concert slightly shortened because of a delay caused by the crowd’s late arrival at the venue.

US shows

May 31st, 2005 by management
Suzanna had two successful performances in the US on April 29 and April 30. The April 29 show at the Club Lido in Boston was slightly dissapointing because Suzanna was only allowed to start her show at a quarter to midnight and was obliged to break off her show at one at night due to the laws in Boston. She apologizes to all her fans who came up for the Club Lido show, that she was not allowed to perform for longer than 75 minutes. However, the show was great and many fans were excited to see her, even though it was the first time for Suzanna to be backed up by a band from the US that was selected for this special occasion. All band members did a great job and Suzanna thanks them for their dedication. Saturday’s show in New Jersey was not affected by a tight time schedule, the show was wonderful and the crowd excited to see her. One of the higlights of the show was the classic Rizao d’nha vida. Suzanna hopes to come back to the US for some more shows later this year and she is very grateful for all of her fans who turned up for the Boston and New Jersey shows, as well as the Washington event on April 22nd.

A night to remember

May 31st, 2005 by management
Friday April 22nd, leading artists in the Cape Verdean music scene gave a powerful performance for a large and jubilant crowd in the Onmi-Shoreham Hotel in Washington DC, USA. All artists performed two or three songs, Suzanna performed Silencio, Nha sonho and Tudo pa bo. The youngsters in the raudience went wild as soon as Suzanna was announced. This was partly due to the fact that some circumstances have prevented Suzanna to perform in the US for over 5 years. While the other artists of the night performed more traditional styles of Cape Verdean music, Suzanna was the only ‘pop music star’ involved in this event. Not only Suzanna, but all artists had powerful performances, amongst them Lura, Bana, Mayra Andrade, Maria de Barros, Nancy Vieira, Ferro Gaita, Arlinda Santos, Celina Pereira and Zeca di Nha Reinalda. At the end of the show, all artists went on stage once again to perform the famous traditional Sodade. This was surely a night to remember.
